As mentioned in the article on ignition timing one essential function of a major tune up is to insure that the timing is being advanced properly. In some cases the initial timing is set and the procedure stops there. A timing light that has a read out capability for the amount of degrees of advance can be used to insure the distributor is function properly. Pictured is a snap-on timing/advance light, model MT 1241. This model can be used to set the initial timing as well as check total advance of the distributor which is one of the most important functions of the distributor and its components. This type timing light can be used to make all the necessary distributor adjustments installed on the engine. I highly recommend the use of any model timing light with advance read out capability.
