If the vacuum advance mechanism is unable to rotate the distributor points plate and advance the timing during acceleration a loss of power will be evident. This condition also contributes to an over heat problem. The points plate (marked with red dot in this picture) can be checked for proper movement by removing the distributor cap and rotate the plate manually. If the plate does not move it can usually be loosened with penetrating oil. The plate is mounted in a ring containing ball bearings. In some cases over the years the bearings have frozen creating the conditions mentioned above.
